I've never taken martial arts lessons, but from what I know I think they would be great at boosting self-confidence and self-esteem. Definitely worth a try! |

I'm sure this will help you greatly, Jedi! :D I totally think that karate lessons will help you in multiple ways - building confidence, giving you an outlet for stress, and building your skills. While I was never too over-weight, I was once about 20 pounds more than what was healthy. I had only intended to drop some pounds, but I ended up losing more than I thought I could and gaining more self esteem than I knew existed. There's nothing like working hard for something and getting as much back as you put in! Good luck with your lessons! Kick some ass! |

I did jiu jitsu for a while and it really does help. You should give it a try. |

I took a karate class before and I believe it does help build self confidence. It did for me. Self Control Martial arts help you build your self-esteem because you get to move at your own pace and succeed individually. Earning belts will give you a sense of accomplishment. They also teach you how to set goals and give you the confidence to reach these goals. Martial arts also teach self-respect and respect for others and give you the sense of relief that you will be able to defend yourself if you need to. Having these skills will give you an all-around confidence in yourself and your abilities. ezinearticles.com/ ?Martial-Arts-and-Self-Esteem &id= 159507 MENTAL OBSTACLES Training martial arts can help you overcome mental obstacles – including self-doubt and a lack of confidence. As you progress through the different levels, you will soon be able to conquer self-doubt and other overwhelming feelings as you start to build mental awareness of your mind/ body connection. Becoming physically able to reach a goal is connected with your mental ability to take your body where you want it to go. ezinearticles.com/ ?Martial-Arts-and-Self-Esteem &id= 159507 |

As someone who just began doing karate about 8 months ago at the age of 33, I can tell you without question that karate training would be an excellent choice for you. The place I go to emphasizes discipline, respect, control, focus, and confidence. In my adult class, I started at the same time as a 13 year old who was painfully shy. At the beginning, he kept almost exclusively to himself. Now, 8 months later, he's speaking up and sharing in class and even offers pointers and suggestions to the other adults in the class (not to mention the fact that his karate technique has improved significantly). If you're looking to work on self-confidence, you're probably a bit nervous about coming into a new enviroment and trying to fit in or be the beginner or the new guy. Let me tell you, this was never a problem with my studio. The first day I was there, everybody came up to me and introduced themselves. It's an incredibly encouraging environment and students (as well as the instructor obviously) will work with newer students as the goal is to get everybody to improve. A lot of this is a direct reflection of the teachers. Find a good place with a good instructor who emphasizes respect and integrity and maturity and you'll have an experience like I had (and continue to have). Best of luck to you! You'll have a lot of fun doing karate! |
