This behavior is virtually self-destructive and only forces us farther away from our loved ones.
You should not give significance only to your feelings as you can easily hurt someone else's feelings in the process. You should enable others to deal with their feelings. If anybody is feeling sad, you should try to determine the reason or just spend some time with the person.
You can try to cheer him up too. You are able to share someone's joyfulness and happiness. The most beautiful thing in life for may of us is sharing our feelings. It is a very unique sensation and brings huge satisfaction. The feelings can be of any sort but simply the idea of sharing them with somebody is very reassuring.

Empathy is a process with different steps and is often understood in terms of levels of identification. Empathy is the ability to connect one's emotions to those of another person, and is often contrasted with apathy or numbness. In short, empathy is crawling into someone else's skin, andis the capacity to do this. Empathy is closely related to compassion.
One note of caution, however. Empathy may be society's glue, but it is impossible to empathize with everyone.
Empathy is more a sense that one can truly understand or imagine the depth of another persons feelings. It implies feeling with a person, rather than feeling sorry for a person. Empathy is about putting yourself in another’s shoes. There is no need to have gone exactly through what the person experienced. If you can imagine, think how that may have made YOU feel, and you’ve got it … you can empathize.
In summary, you should think about other people's feelings before your own. You should be able to hold in your own feelings at such times and keep them for some other time.
