Changing Self Image and Belief
Your self image is what you think about when you think about yourself – it’s how you ‘picture yourself’ in your minds eye. Put another way, its how you see yourself to be. Having a good, positive, self image is extremely important if you want to have a better self esteem.
A low self image has a major impact on your life, and could even make you feel worthless. You can boost your own self image by concentrating on all the good qualities you possess. Those qualities can then become your strength, which in turn will automatically help you to change your self image for the better.
There are certain ways in which you can easily boost your self image:
- You can try to pinpoint situations that are troubling you and that are affecting your self image. These may be some weaker aspects of your personality that you can change if you were to make a conscious effort to do so.
You can change these aspects of your personality and easily add a new dimension or drive to yourself. This will definitely help you to improve your self image quickly. And as weaknesses are a part of every person’s life, it is a valuable exercise to learn how to deal with your own weaknesses and how to turn them into strengths instead.
- Often the thoughts that come into your mind relating to a particular situation or to a certain person are the cause of low self image. You might feel that somebody else is better than you in certain ways, which then leads to feelings of nervousness and self doubts.
You can try to catch yourself having these thoughts, and eradicate them. For example, the self talk that we all engage in from time to time can often have a negative tone, and this again can impact poorly on your self image.
- Low self image can also lead to unwanted reactions that can be either physical, behavioural or emotional. These different reactions include changes in appetite, feelings of anger, tension headaches etc. Thus, you should avoid thinking negatively about yourself.
- If you can, try to keep an eye on your thought patterns. You should be able to see whether the thoughts in your mind are positive, negative or if they are a logical and rational mixture of both. Keep in mind that it is not necessary for your thoughts to always ‘flow’ in the same direction at all times.
If you start to criticise yourself for every action, you could start to develop strong feelings of a low self image. You should always feel good about yourself. If you feel the positive vibes coming from within yourself, then everyone around you is going to feel drawn towards you.
